Courses & Education

This Section is for anyone who is interested in A Surf Life Saving Australia Award.  It will give you an overview of each award and what the pre-requisites are.

 

AWARD DETAILS

COURSE DATES

SURF RESCUE CERTIFICATE (SRC)

  • The SRC course will give you an excellent introduction into how Surf Life Saving Clubs patrol and manage the beach providing a safe and assured environment to the public who come to the beach to enjoy themselves.
  • The course is competency based and covers 9 units; Safety and Wellbeing, Surf Awareness and Skills, Anatomy and Physiology, Basic First Aid, Basic Resuscitation, Resuscitation (CPR – only for candidates 15 years and over), Communications, Rescue techniques and Patrols.
  • The course will run for approximately 8–10 weeks on one weekday evening and a Saturday or Sunday morning. At the end of the course you will sit a dry and wet exam and if successful you will have achieved an excellent and valuable qualification.
  • Active members who gain this award you will be assigned to a patrol.

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 13 years old on the date of final assessment.
  • Have completed a 200m swim in 5 minutes or less in a pool of at least 25m length or in open water on a measured course.

BRONZE MEDALLION (BM)

  • The BM course will give you an excellent introduction into how Surf Life Saving Clubs patrol and manage the beach providing a safe and assured environment for the public who come to the beach to enjoy themselves.
  • The course is competency based and covers 12 units; Safety and Well being, Surf Awareness and Skills, Anatomy and Physiology, Basic First Aid, First Aid, Basic Resuscitation, Resuscitation (CPR), Communications, Radio Communications, Rescue techniques, Carries and supports and Patrols.
  • Courses usually run for approximately 10–12 weeks on one weekday evening and a Saturday or Sunday morning. At the end of the course you will sit a dry exam one evening and a wet exam at the weekend and if successful you will have achieved an excellent and valuable qualification.
  • Active Members who gain this award will be assigned to a patrol.

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.
  • Complete a 400m swim in 9 minutes or less in a pool of at least 25m length or in open water on a measured course.

SENIOR FIRST AID CERTIFICATE

  • This award will expand on First Aid skills and will detail further illness and injury treatments

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment.

IRB CREW CERTIFICATE

This award is for individuals wishing to act as a crew person for the IRB.

  • The award will detail pre and post operations and operational crewing and rescues.

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 15 years old prior to starting training for this award.
  • Hold a current SLSA Bronze Medallion

AGE GROUP MANAGERS COURSE

ADVANCED RESCUSCITION CERTIFICATE (ARC)

  • The award will expand on resuscitation practices and include the application of the airbag resuscitator, spinal neck brace and oropharyngeal OP airways

Pre-Requisites

  • Hold a current SLSA Bronze Medallion
  • Candidates must be 15 years old on the date of final assessment

DEFIBRILLATOR CERTIFICATE

  • This award is for members who wish to operate a semi-automatic defibrillator.

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age on the date of final assessment.

  • Hold a current Advanced Resuscitation Certificate.

SILVER MEDALLION (IRB DRIVER)

  • The IRB Drivers certificate is for individuals wishing to drive an IRB.
  • The award will detail pre and post operations and operational driving and rescues.

Pre-Requisites

  • Be a minimum of 17 years old on the date of final assessment.
  • Hold a current SLSA Bronze medallion.
  • Hold a current SLSA IRB Crewperson Certificate.
  • Hold a current state/territory boat licence (where applicable)

SILVER MEDALLION (PATROL CAPTAIN)

  • This course is for Patrol Captains however, note that the award is being replaced by a Cert 3 in Beach Management at the start of the 2005-2006 season.

Pre-Requisites

  • Candidates must be 18 years old on the date of final assessment
  • Hold a current SLSA Bronze medallion. Advanced Resuscitation Certificate.
